Hawaii and 15 years

We stayed in the most gorgeous hotel in Maui at Wailea- the Andaz.  It was so relaxing to be at such a beautiful place with awe-inspiring ocean views and nothing to do but let go of all stress.  Most of our days were spent snorkeling in front of our hotel- there were turtles seen every single day and loads of colorful fish.  We also spent some time reading, taking naps, swimming in the pools and going on walks to explore the area by us (oh, and also icing my ankle 2x per day).  Hawaii is just something else and we really love it.

We had a rental car during our week stay, so we had to drive the Road to Hana and see all of those famous waterfalls and gorgeous beaches.  The drive itself was stunning- with tons of topography, vegetation and the best views on the windy roads for hours on end.

Black Sand Beach...the sand was tiiiiny black pebbles and really satisfying to sink your feet into.  The water was really rough here so you couldn't swim, but we walked over the cliffs all around it.

Another stop along our way was this red sand beach with a built-in swimming hole- you can see that it was naturally blocked by the huge rocks to create a less dangerous place to dip your toes.  The teal water contrasting with the red sand was so lovely.

Picked up some really expensive snacks at Hasegawa's General Store...worth it.

The gorgeousness on the road to Hana is never-ending!

We stopped at this waterfall (that I cannot remember the name of) and spent a lot of time just hanging out and soaking it in.  The water here was freezing.

Instead of turning around and heading back at the normal turnaround, we kept on going all the way around the island because it looked like a shorter distance on the map.  Little did we know that the roads were nearly impassible at some points and it was mostly farmland, or very dry and arid hills.  We stumbled upon a few gems like this church- I don't think this is the one, but its close to where Charles Lindbergh was buried.

There was almost nothing to see on the drive back, so as soon as we saw civilization again, we stopped and had dinner.  It turned out to be a really delicious meal of gourmet cheeseburgers with a side of a superb sunset.

Brian booked a snorkeling trip out to the Molokini crater.  We took this sailboat and swam around in the crystal clear waters inside of Molokini looking for new kinds of fish.  The water was the clearest we have ever seen- just stunning.

Dreamiest setting for a week of relaxing...

We drove to Kaanapali one day as well, to explore the beaches on that side of Maui.  Wow- they were incredible...probably our favorite on this island.  We snorkeled, hiked, and then drove all over to make sure we saw everything there was to see.

I spy a turtle swimming around up there...do you see it??

This trip was no different, in one respect, than other trips we've taken together in the past--in that it ended with me in the ER.  I had such a scary experience on the morning that we left.  After completing an 11 mile training run, Brian and I decided to go snorkeling one last time.  In front of our hotel was a large open beach with a big coral reef right next to it and another large beach on the other side of the reef.  We decided to swim around the reef to the other side while snorkeling.  I lost my bearings under the water and came too close to the reef, and the waves pulled me rather forcefully inside the middle of the sharp and rocky edges.  I tried with all of my might to swim out of it, but the waves were relentlessly pulling me further and further away from safety and deeper and deeper into the reef.  I desperately tried to stand up, grabbing any rock I could, and walk on top, but every time I would stand, I would be knocked down again.  I was truly terrified and thought that I may never get out- because there was no way any sane person would come in there after me.  One of my fins came off, and I struggled to put it back on because I knew walking on bare feet would prove treacherous.  I was able to do that, and then eventually got to a more shallow area, and stood up on the reef and limped/walked over and off of it to the open water.  I felt pain everywhere because I had been knocked about for what seemed like forever, with sharp jabs coming at every turn.  I looked down and could see a large flap of skin dangling from my knee.  I made my way to the shore, all the while looking for Brian.  As my knee came out of the water, it was pouring blood.  I found Brian, quickly and shakily told him what happened, and he helped me get to a shower to rinse off.  I had been badly scraped all over my body, but my knee was by far the worst.  We were told to go to the local ER up the road so that they could rinse and clean out the wound--if there was any coral left inside of me, it would continue to grow causing lots of problems in the future.  We waited forever to see someone, and they stitched me up, covered it with bandages, and told me to avoid bending my knee for a few days- which was going to be easy since I was a couple of hours from getting on a flight all day long! ;)   All that being said, I quickly looked at the incident and my ability to get out of the reef as a total miracle- and with as little injuries as I had- that's the only way that I can explain it.  The entire experience really rattled me because it was one of those things that I wasn't sure I was going to get out of at all.  It was on the same leg that I had rolled my ankle on earlier in the week too- so I was a swollen, hot mess on that side!

We ate our anniversary dinner at the Four Seasons on the 27th and it was sooo good.  Its a tradition to go to a really fancy dinner to celebrate and this one was really good.

15 Years

15 years (and 3 months) ago when Brian asked me to marry him...aaah!!  We look so young.  Rebecca helped serve us the dinner from Olive Garden- which was my favorite meal back then- ha!  Happy 15 Brian!!

Oahu, HI

For our 15th anniversary, Brian and I (but mostly Brian- I'm one lucky wife!) planned a trip to Hawaii.  We went to Kauai for our honeymoon, so its a really special place for us.  We haven't been back since then, so once Brian planned this trip, we were both so excited to be back there and celebrate.  We flew into Oahu for one night and stayed at a hotel on the beach.  We woke up early to go on a long run because I'm training for a half marathon, and Brian usually goes with me for the better part of my runs.  I had 10 miles to do this time; we ran the first 3 or 4 together, after which Brian had to turn around to check out of our hotel.  Around mile 5, I was running through a gorgeous neighborhood and got really caught up in looking around and didn't notice that the sidewalk severely shortened in front of me, causing me to miss the edge and roll my ankle really bad.  I had to sit down for a few minutes and breathe through the pain.  I had no way to contact Brian and really no way for him to come and help me anyway because we didn't have a car. My only choice was to run or walk back the 5 miles that I'd come up.  I was really worried about it, but after limping a bit into the run, I was able to pick up speed again and actually ran with little to no pain.  It was pretty miraculous because as soon as I stopped, my ankle became extremely swollen and bruised.  I iced it and hoped that it was less severe than it looked so that I could do my half marathon in 4 weeks.  We got our car and drove to meet up with our pseudo-daughter, Elle, who is at BYU- Hawaii.  It was so fun to see her again (she lived with us in London when we first moved there) and have her show us around the island a little bit.  It was a wet day, but we wanted to do a hike that would really pay off.  Elle took us to Three Peaks, or the Olomana Trail.  Didn't take us too long to realize this wasn't a hike for beginners, or us city-folks. ;)  Elle pretty much jumped up the mountain and made it look so easy.  Whatever the work to get up here, the views were most definitely worth it- even with a total bum ankle!!

Crazy beautiful views.  We chatted the entire 3 hours up and down and it was so fun to catch up and hear all about her adventurous college life in Hawaii.  Life is pretty good for these lucky BYU-H kids that get to live in such a beautiful place.  On another note, we didn't bring a drop of water or a single snack, so by the end, we were famished and so thirsty.  Not smart.  Brian and I really had no idea what we were getting into...haha.

We were literally scaling rock cliffs with sheer drop-offs that made your stomach do flips.  It was by far the hardest hike Brian and I have ever been on.

Afterwards, we got a drink, went back to Elle's apartment, rinsed the mud off of our bodies, and then went to grab the best burgers at Seven Brothers with her roomates.  We also drove around the temple there- which was so gorgeous.  Loved spending time with Elle! Next day....off to Maui!

Spring Break, Florida Pt. 2

We spent the better part of an entire day at St. Andrew's State Park, right down the street from our beach house.  It was gorgeous water and perfect white sand.  The kids had a ton of fun jumping off of the sand bank and measuring who nabbed the longest leap.  We also rented a paddle board, which provided a TON of fun and even some hilarious attempts at surfing.

These 3 girls are the best of friends and spent lots of time together.  Also, lots of pictures of Jane...because she's so cute.

Pretty sure Caleb nabbed the first prize for longest jump.

Ha!  I love that my dad is always up for a little challenge.  The cousins (and adults) were cracking up so hard to see him up on the board.

We drove down to Rosemary Beach one day to grab a delicious and indulgent breakfast at the Donut Hole Cafe.  We explored Rosemary Beach for just a little bit--that place has become so popular that its lost a little bit of its appeal, to be honest.  It was totally packed.  Despite that, Brian and I rented bikes and pedaled around for a bit, with Hannah and Tessa in tow.  We rode all over Rosemary and then our favorite, Alys Beach.  So pretty.

The girl cousins spent a few hours on the last two days setting up a really impressive lemonade stand on the beach.  They had Poppy buy them lemonade powder at the Dollar Store (legitimately his favorite place to shop) and they made signs and set up shop right on the beach in front of our house.  Unfortunately for them, the area we were staying was pretty sparsely populated so they didn't have many customers.  But, they had a lot of fun planning and setting it up.

Our farewell picture below...this is our group for the week and we had SOOOO much fun together.  My kids have asked to have a repeat of this trip every year.  I agree.

Spring Break, Florida Pt. 1

We had the very best Spring Break with our east coast cousins, the Sedgwicks, as well as Grandma and Grandpa.  We rented a big suburban here in New Jersey and drove the 18 hours to Florida.  We made a few pit stops along the way, one of which was Savannah, Georgia.  I grew up in Georgia and haven't been back in several years, and it was so nice to be back amongst the muggy weather and gorgeous moss trees.  Savannah is stunning- we took a tour and saw most of the old city, and then walked back to our favorite spots to explore more closely.  The mansions are so beautiful and the green squares sprinkled all over the city add to its splendor and charm.  Loved the churches and graveyards- weird, I know--but they were so old and so cool.

My mom found this really great house right outside of Panama  City that was literally RIGHT ON the beach. It was perfect.  When we arrived, we immediately ran outside to see the ocean and feel the sand.  We were all a little distracted when we headed back inside and Tessa kept on wandering, unbeknownst to us.  We didn't realize for a few minutes that she was gone, and obviously we were extremely panicked.  We ran outside yelling her name and found her just down from our house with a group of really nice people, who had already called the police.  So scary, but we were so glad we found her.

The kids were in the water and sand from the time the sun came up until it went down.  I'm not sure why we even brought clothes!  Our house also had a hot tub, which was used a TON as well.  I grew up always going to Florida beaches, which, in my opinion, are the best beaches because the sand is a powdery white and the water is almost always a crystal blue.

Cousin best friends...nothing better.

A beach vacation with my kids is my favorite kind of vacation.  Lots of relaxing, playing, and laughing all mixed in together making the best memories.

Love these two babies of the families.  Our niece, Jane, is pretty much the cutest little 3 year old on the planet with her gigantic brown eyes.  No one can get enough of her, but she plays a lot of hard-to-get. ;)

Part II continued next post

El Bronx

Lauren had a homework assignment to explore an area of the Bronx. Brian wanted to help and chose a place he hasn't visited since his LDS mission back in 1999- Parkchester.

(Following post written by Brian)

It hasn't changed much at all, but was fun to show Lauren a few of my favorite (or memorable) spots. One of those being Cross Bronx Pizza where the slices are about 3 times bigger than a typical slice anywhere else in NYC. As missionaries we often ate there before/after transfers because it was cheap and filling.

Sisters weekend - NYC food Tour

I have six sisters, which is pretty much the best thing EVER--especially since we are all older now and in the same stage of life- with lots of kids and life experiences to share with each other.  There is nothing better than spending time with my six best friends!  So, when my oldest sister, Jennefer, planned a last-minute birthday trip to NYC and two of my other sisters decided to join, I knew it was a recipe for an awesome weekend.

One of the highlights was this Greenwich Village Food Tour we did altogether.  The weather was amazing, so we walked around outside tasting some of the best food and hearing some really cool history for 4 hours around the most charming village in NYC.  We ate famous Joe's pizza, Faccio's arancini balls, Milk & Cookies oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, O & Co. truffle oil popcorn, Murray's gourmet cheese boards, meatballs, eggplant parmigiana and Rocco's cannolis, to name a few.  All of which is pretty much my perfect day, but then you combine it with good company, great weather and my favorite part of NYC, and its a recipe for amazingness.  Highly recommend (thanks Paige Holder for the tip)!

Brian came with us on the tour, but he was more interested in pictures than food...story of my life. ;) I really love the pictures he gets, but I do NOT like being in all of the pictures in the moment.  But, really I am so grateful that he's passionate about it.

We ate the BEST eggplant parmigiana at this Italian restaurant- Rafele's.  The sauce was absolutely incredible, so I asked if I could purchase a jar of it on our way out (the chef is a famous Food Network competition winner) and he personally came out and gifted me a jar to take home!  Such a fun memory and so generous of him.

Its hard to not eat great when you're in NYC, but when the door is littered with Zagat stickers, you know you've hit a good one.  Ate really delicious meatballs here at Trattoria on Bleecker Street.

Most of these homes in the Village are as old as our nation's history....and absolutely stunning.

Everyone needs a mid-chew picture in their life, right?!? ;)   (thanks brian!)

Jenn and my sisters stayed in the Times Square Marriott and had a view of the lights of Times Square- it was Emily's first time here and it was a really magical place to stay.  So glad they nabbed that view.  I just had the best weekend with them- we stayed up way too late, ate waaaay too much, walked until we got blisters (par for the course), celebrated Jenn's birthday and laughed until we cried.  A few of them even lucked out with Hamilton tickets.  I love making memories with my sisters!

Washington Square Park

We had this stretch of really nice and warm weather in February.  We let ourselves think that maybe we were done with winter...but it was just a tease, and there were still a few months of frigid winter up NYC's sleeve.  But, we enjoyed it while it lasted!  We ventured out to one of my favorite parts of the city on this unusually warm Saturday.  Washington Square Park is always busy and full of performers and street artists, making it a really fun place to people watch and let the kids run wild on the two fun playgrounds there.  Its also in a beautiful area- right by NYU and flanked by beautiful old homes and lots of yummy restaurants.  Can't forget the gorgeous Washington Square Arch too- reminds us of Marble Arch in London.

If you look closely, you'll notice there is a patch of dark hair in the back of my head.  Funny story (I can laugh about it now, but I was crying at the time).  Taylor was playing with my hair one night and I wasn't paying close attention as she wrapped and twisted my hair around her comb.  Apparently she thought this wasn't a big deal...until the comb wouldn't come out!  Once we realized the mistake, we tried for over an hour to get it out- cutting the comb down to tiny bits, but still no luck in getting any hair loosened from its gnarly grip!  Finally, we just had to cut my hair.  For a person with really thin hair, this wasn't easy.  The hair has since grown back, but for a while, I just had this awesome haircut going on. ;)

Who's taking a picture of who???  ;) Walking around Greenwich Village always delights.

We stopped to grab a treat at Milk after walking around for a couple of hours.

I love that my older girls are getting to an age where they are really fun to talk to and even tease sometimes.  Kate is the best sport and is really great and laughing at herself and not taking things too seriously.  She's really so fun.

Love this city and love these girls and who they are becoming.

Lauren is baptized!

Brian's last area on his mission put him right here on Sundays, in our church building in Manhattan.  The last baptism he performed before he went home was even right here in this font.  So, to baptize his daughter in the same font almost 20 years later was pretty special.  We are so grateful and proud that Lauren chose to be baptized on her 8th birthday- she's been looking forward to it for years!  Poppy, Grandma, Nana and Papa Crofts, and the Sedgwicks were all able to come as well.  It was so nice to have so many people there that love Lauren.  We invited the members of our ward as well, and because we have the BEST people in our ward- they came and supported Lauren in big numbers- the room was filled and there were even people sitting in the hallway.  A lot of love was felt that day.   Papa talked about baptism and Poppy spoke on the Holy Ghost.  We had our friends write their favorite scripture or spiritual advice for Lauren on little note cards for her to read later.

20170121_LAUREN-BAPTISM_013.jpg

Poppy coached these cute grandkids to sing "When I am Baptized" prior to the service.  Jessica was able to accompany (and being that she is a concert pianist, those girls don't even know how lucky they are!)  Poppy kept true to form, and really pushed for perfection on this one!  He's a great teacher of music.

20170121_LAUREN-BAPTISM_2X_002.jpg

Lauren wore the same baptism dress as Taylor, and she looked so beautiful.  I really couldn't love her anymore than I do.  The baptism was wonderful!

20170121_LAUREN-BAPTISM_058.jpg

We served a little bit of food afterwards.  I cannot say enough good things about the members of our ward- not only did they come out and support Lauren, but they brought a ton of food to share with everyone.  It was so nice, because what I had planned on would never have been enough.  We seriously have the BEST ward.

Lauren is such a light in our family.  She is almost zero drama and is always looking out for the needs of others.  She would give her sisters, or anyone else, the shirt off of her back if they needed it.  She has the biggest heart and always has a smile on her face.  She's been constantly coloring/painting rainbows since the moment she could draw, and its a true reflection of her inside- she is bright and happy and colorful and full of love.  My heart might burst with how much love I feel for this one, and we are so proud of her good decisions.
